The large Alice backpack consists of a drawstring bag and 3 outer pockets. 3 other smaller pockets are located on top of the bag for carrying ammunition. Of the 3 lower outer pockets, the two outer pockets are tunneled to the bag, allowing long items to be carried between the bag and each bag. The lower pockets have a drawstring at the top for a better seal of the bag before closing the flap. The large ALICE backpack must be used with the LC-1 backpack frame.

The bag has a separate pocket for the radio. Tie down straps and D-rings inside the bag are used to shorten the backpack if it is not to be fully filled. The bag flap has a pocket that can be opened by pulling apart 2 tabs. Small flat items can be carried in this bag. By squeezing the flap sides, it is closed. Hangers are also provided for carrying individual equipment. The ALICE field pack is worn on the soldier's back by attaching it to the packing frame.

An envelope pocket is located at the top, back of the backpack and padded with spacer cloth into which the field pack frame is inserted when the field pack is used on the field packing frame. Buckles and straps on each side near the ground are used to anchor the field pack to the field pack frame. 2 rectangular wire loops on the top back of the field pack and D-rings on each side at the bottom of the field pack are used to attach the shoulder strap.

The large ALICE backpack system offers padded and easily adjustable shoulder straps that relieve pressure while the kidney pad strap on the frame helps with heavy loads. The quick release buckle allows the entire backpack to be dropped immediately in an emergency situation. The mixed aluminum and iron outer frame makes it lightweight but stronger.
