Author Cyndie L. Gerken continues her award-winning series with her fourth book about National Road history. This publication sheds more light on our country's first Federally-funded interstate highway - the National Road - which was authorized by legislation signed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1806. Construction began in Cumberland, Maryland and had reached Wheeling, (West) Virginia by 1818. After some delays, groundbreaking for the National Road in Ohio finally took place on July 4, 1825 at St. Clairsville in eastern Belmont County. As construction of the Road progressed along the surveyed route across the state, three large rivers and many smaller streams had to be crossed, necessitating the building of 21 wooden covered bridges, at least 20 massive stone arch bridges, and more than a thousand smaller stone culverts, many of them "gothic" (arched). None of the covered bridges remain, but a number of the stone bridges and culverts, including several of the famous "S" shaped bridges, can still be seen. A few of the old stone bridges still carry local traffic. A number of these historic structures are depicted in early 20th-century postcards and photographs, and many of these early views are reproduced in this book, along with photos taken by the author and others of existing structures. The stonemasons and carpenters who built the various bridges are identified, and the legends and folklore surrounding some of the old bridges are also recounted. The book is over 500 pages long and contains 92 maps, 350 photographs, 44 portraits and engravings, and 15 tables listing the bridge builders and their bridges.
