Building Trucial States: Architecture, Environment and Social Change in the United Arab Emirates

This is a social history of architecture in the United Arab Emirates - U.A.E.- after the signing of the Maritime Truce in 1820 when it became a British protectorate known as the Trucial States and before its independence in 1971. Building Trucial States maps the journey through the built environment, its meaning, and use as foreign interests transformed the historic sheikhdoms from a primarily subsistence based economy to a global economic powerhouse through oil.
