At the end of the 1960s in Italy—but also abroad, particularly in France and England—a very distinctive trend began to emerge: what became known as library music, or sonorization. As the name suggests, these were true music libraries created to accompany audiovisual productions such as television programs, advertisements, documentaries, and films. Because they were produced under conditions of total artistic freedom, they are often difficult—if not impossible—to categorize, as they were not tied to any specific musical genre. This freedom also allowed composers, often working in complete anonymity, to experiment with avant-garde and highly innovative sounds, anticipating musical developments that would only become widespread many years later.
