In the seventeenth century, many ironworks were founded in Finland. The large forested areas in the Pohja region, with their unrestricted possibilities for hydropower use and the extremely affordable waterways, made them an ideal centre for the Finnish metal industry. The ironworks in Antskog have been around since about 1630, and Billnäs followed in 1641. Founded in 1649, Fiskars is now one of the oldest companies in the western world.
