Description

This set brings together the 6 CDs which were produced previously under the title “Bach in Context”. In this series Musica Amphion and the Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam shed new light on Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) masterful oeuvre: cantatas and organ works with corresponding literary-musical themes are brought into a quasi-liturgical coherence. By using the church organ as a continuo instrument and setting the choruses and chorales singularly, Bach's sound world and performance practice are approached as closely as possible. The Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam was founded by its director Harry van der Kamp, and gained world fame with their concerts and recordings of Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, notably the complete vocal works by Sweelinck for Glossa, which won an Edison Award. Musica Amphion is the instrumental group founded by its director. Pieter-Jan Belder, harpsichordist, organist and conductor, whose discography is vast and widely acclaimed. The extensive texts and liner notes (150 pages) are available in the box set and also on the Brilliant Classics website.
