Design Principles for Modern Rotating Electromechanical Machines

To date, the rotating electromechanical machines in the form of electric generators have remained the producer of the vast majority of global electric power, and in the form of electric motors, also account for the consumption of approximately 60% of the overall electric power produced globally. Because of the large energy flows with these devices, they have a significant impact on the environment and have become an important part of the conversation about many energy issues including global warming and the efficient consumption of electric power produced by renewable energy sources. Therefore, the excellent design of these machines is of paramount importance. This book discusses mainly the design of the alternating-current and direct-current rotating electromechanical machines with emphasis on very salient areas including thermal and heat removal (which have hitherto not been adequately discussed and simplified in most existing textbooks), magnetic circuit design, electric circuit design, mechanical considerations, winding designs, and permanent magnet design for permanent magnet machines. With detailed and easy-to-understand explanations, numerous real-life worked examples, and exercises for practice, the objective of this book is to help both undergraduate and postgraduate students of Electrical Engineering and indeed Electrical Engineers in the industry with salient and in-depth knowledge and requirements in the design of these machines.
