Description

Ayasofya, Hagia Sophia, According to oriental theology this name came from the Greek Αγία Σοφία which means divine wisdom, it is the name of a monument in the city of Istanbul in Turkey, the only city in the world that spans in two continents : Europe and Asia, it was successively 402 years orthodox basilica, 117 years iconoclasm basilica, 361 years orthodox basilica, 57 years catholic church, 192 years orthodox basilica, 481 years mosque, 86 years museum and nowadays mosque. For less than 1700 years this monument has undergone all these conversions with controversial changes of the state, it’s a whole story full of historical twists, disappointments and hopes. After the conquest of Istanbul by El-Fatih Sultan Mehmet II, Ayasofya has reached the rank of formal place of culture of the emperor Ottoman from a simple mosque to Külliye, which means complex. Ayasofya Külliyesi or Ayasofya the complex is a whole symbol loaded with meanings beyond being just a mosque in the Turkish Islamic culture. Ayasofya was at the heart of the administration of the Ottoman state with the renovators, innovators and restorers sultans and without forgetting the famous architect Mimar Sinan whose footprints are visible till this day on his works in Ayasofya and in particular the strengthening of the building itself and the tomb of Sultan Selim II, one of his finest works. Ayasofya was the only mosque where the sultans came to Friday prayers and the Aid with their statesmen, and in Ramadan in particular on the night of Kadir, the most sacred night of Islam. What has been the Ottoman cultural environment of Ayasofya for centuries ? What was the main axis to save this monument ? What were the great efforts made to this great edifice under the auspices of the Ottoman sultans ? These are the questions that this book modestly try to ask.
