Description

The main objective of this narrative is to attempt to present a timeline related to the cultural, social, and historical events that allowed the Romans to almost instantaneously design and construct the ancient world’s most powerful naval fleet. This seemingly surprising and almost impossible task was accomplished despite the fact that the Romans had no virtual experience in ship-building or in the skills related to navigation, naval warfare, or dealing with sudden and deadly weather conditions that could destroy an entire fleet of ships. Moreover, according to some written historical accounts that emphasized that the Romans were generally ignorant about Mediterranean Sea, it is a mistaken belief, But despite these claims, it is fair to assume that the Romans had developed a long-standing interest in the size and shape of coastal vessels that had long been used by the Phoenicians (Carthaginians) and Greeks dating back to, at least, the ninth or eighth centuries BCE. Thus, this allows for a claim, which in actual fact, however, the Romans were, if nothing else, keen-observers of the greater known Mediterranean world. This knowledge included something of the dynamic urban life that had emerged in the Nile River Valley and the urban nature of the Mesopotamian world of the Fertile Crescent region. This knowledge arrived on the shores of Italy in the seventh century BCE, when Greek colonists established urban centers and trade in southern Italy and in Sicily. Contact with theses emerging urban centers, in turn, provided the Romans with elements of an oral history that also described the rise to the first great cities. Thus, it is fair to claim that the Romans undoubtedly were aware of Greek culture, based on sea travel that, after contact with the Phoenicians, also emanated from Athenian mother cities. At the same time, the great adventures of Alexander and the spread of Greek culture that came to dominate three centuries of the Hellenistic age also influenced the Romans.
