In 1925, American politician and entrepreneur William A. Clark (1839 - 1925) bequeathed a major portion of his large and varied collection to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC. The diversity of the collection reflected not only the senator's catholic tastes but the tastes of an era that saw the formation of many great private collections. In 2014, the Corcoran’s board announced the oldest private art museum, and its venerable college of art and design would cease to exist as an independent institution. The National Gallery of Art added 6,430 artworks from the Corcoran’s collection while the vast majority, close to 9,000 pieces, were gifted to the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, including most of Clark’s Greek and Roman antiquities. This catalogue provides a record of Clark's ancient art collection deaccessioned from American University and sold by Sands of Time Ancient Art.
