As one of the best varieties for autumn sowing that can withstand winter, this cabbage variety can be grown almost year-round so you can always have a hearty vegetable ready in the pantry. Provided there is fair seasonal weather, this cabbage will flourish whether you sow it in the ground, in raised planting beds or in containers!

HOW TO PLANT: Wheelers Imperial can be harvested from January from autumn sowings and September from spring sowings. Prepare the ground well by digging in organic matter to aid moisture retention. Then plant 30cm between seeds and 45cm between rows, sowing directly outside in shallow drills/rows about 1.5cm deep. If sowing early, either grow seedlings in a greenhouse or indoors to avoid frost damage.

TOP GROWING TIPS: Plant in a sunny or partially shaded spot outside and feed plants if planting in early spring with a high nitrogen feed to encourage growth. Water thoroughly every ten days and only in the morning; too much moisture in the evening can encourage slugs and make sure to cover leafy plants like cabbage with cloches before any frosty weather. After the initial harvest, you can harvest more cabbage heads from the same plant; as many as 6 smaller cabbages will grow.
