We know from our own experience that you can do without a thermos. You can go into the kitchen every few minutes and heat water, checking each time with a thermometer to make sure it is the right temperature. You can... But since I use a one-litre thermos that lasts for a few refills, I know it wasn't a bad investment to buy. :) It is made of 18/8 INOX stainless steel and has a double wall that contains an engineered vacuum. The thermos also contains a special transport stopper that can be replaced by a pouring cap. This is particularly helpful when pouring mate with the so-called "mound" of a wall of dried fruit, as is the case with fine chimarrao, for example. The thermal properties are definitely very good too. The thermos holds both hot and ice-cold water. It can store water for up to 9 hours and up to 8 hours, which is enough to prepare up to two servings of yerba mate. In South America, hardly anyone pours mate from a jug or glass, most people use thermos jugs.
