Description

As a consequence of colonialism the dominance of neo-colonial socio-political institutions over African traditional socio-political institutions in Africa’s socio-political structure, has severely disrupted development in Africa. Neo-colonial socio-political institutions in support of import dependent economies in Africa have continued to encourage trade between Africa and its former colonisers, despite the unfavourable terms of trade for Africa. This ‘neo-colonial trade’ with Africa has discouraged industrial growth in the post independence era to the detriment of Africa’s domestic economies. In addition, Africa has unfortunately succumbed to Eurocentric socio-economic policies, like the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) hatched by the neo-colonial institutions of the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, established by the Bretton Woods Conference of 1944. These Eurocentric economic policies has left Africa with the poorest economies in world, rising youth unemployment, an infrastructure gap estimated in the billions of dollars, and continually depreciating non-convertible currencies, amid a massive and growing foreign debt problem. Afrocism is a development policy for Africa based on African history, and culture that believes that the solution to Africa’s development problems lies within Africa itself, and not in Eurocentric development policies based on European core values. Afrocism as a development policy presents Africa with an alternative approach to development that is inward looking, and politically inclusive, and promises Africa a better future.
