The project of the Tornado was born from the collaboration of Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom to create a multi-role combat aircraft with high flight performance. Thus a twin-engine aircraft was developed, with two-seater configuration and variable geometry wings to better respond to its main role: low-altitude supersonic bomber fighter capable of "following" the profile of the terrain. The Tornado IDS (Interdictor/Strike), ideal for attack missions, was the first to be deployed by the flight operations departments of the three countries that developed the project. From the original project was also created the ECR (Electronic Combat/ Reconaissance) version, used by the Italian Air Force and the German Luftwaffe, equipped to carry out missions of suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD), electronic warfare and advanced reconnaissance.
