For over three decades, David Henschel captured the world through his lens—documenting history, uncovering political intrigues, and chasing stories across the globe. This memoir is not just a collection of nearly 300 compelling photographs; it is a journey through the triumphs and struggles of a self-made photojournalist. After leaving behind a corporate career, Henschel pursued his passion for photography—despite having no formal training. He took on the challenge headfirst, balancing family responsibilities with an unpredictable freelance career. From local portraits to historic events, his camera became his brush, painting stories of humanity with light and shadow. The adventure truly began when Henschel was selected as the official photographer for the American Jewish Press Association’s historic Conference on Soviet Jewry in Moscow. Here, he found himself navigating tense political landscapes, meeting dissidents in secret, and forming unlikely liaisons with Soviet officials. This defining experience led to decades of international photojournalism—where he traveled to world hotspots, documenting moments that few had access to, all on his own terms, without the constraints of newsroom editors. A self-directed storyteller, Henschel’s work spans borders, conflicts, and untold narratives. Later, in retirement, he transformed his experiences into fiction—crafting novels inspired by the people and places that shaped his career. A Picture Taker’s Journal is a visual and literary journey of risk, artistry, and an unrelenting pursuit of truth through photography.
