Renaissance Lute Technique: A Video-Handbook for Beginners to Advanced Players Vol. I

The handbook is dedicated to the Renaissance lute and its performance technique, based on historical sources, with exercises and excerpts from literature. Each example is integrated by a video (with links and QR code) which completes the didactic proposal. The text is in Italian and in English. Beginning with hand settings and ending with more complex pieces, the handbook is intended for both novice and experienced lute players who wish to expand their technical knowledge of the instrument. The book is divided into seven parts: I - Hand position according to historical sources; II - Advice on practice (from authors of the time); III - 130 exercises on pure technique; IV - 53 examples taken from literature; V - 22 historical examples for a specific approach to polyphony; VI - 4 studies on legato (a not Renaissance practice, but didactically very formative and necessary for baroque instruments); VII - 10 pieces selected to provide the student with a corpus that can encapsulate the essence of the technical and musical aspects. Exercises and examples are enriched by 210 videos with a short and concise guide for the indications and motivations of the executive and study choices shown in the video. Tables and general rules complete the book. In the Appendix I have included my own adaptation, following its style, of a Buddha's work that years ago struck me because it could fit perfectly into teaching and the many aspects that a lute player must know, develop and deepen. This revision was a unique opportunity to be able to organize a didactic guide in the widest possible sense, touching also reflections and concepts that go beyond the mere instrumental performance. Il manuale è dedicato al liuto rinascimentale e alla sua tecnica esecutiva, basata su fonti storiche, con esercizi ed estratti dalla letteratura. Ogni esempio è integrato da un video (grazie a link e QR code) che completa la proposta didattica. Il testo è in italiano e in inglese. Partendo dall'impostazione delle mani per arrivare ai brani più complessi, il manuale si rivolge sia a liutisti alle prime armi sia a quelli più esperti che desiderino integrare la loro conoscenza tecnica dello strumento. Il libro è diviso in sette parti: I - Posizione delle mani secondo le fonti storiche; II - Consigli sulla pratica (da autori dell'epoca); III - 130 esercizi di tecnica pura; IV - 53 esempi tratti dalla letteratura; V - 22 esempi storici per un approccio specifico alla polifonia; VI - 4 studi sui legati (prassi non rinascimentale, ma didatticamente molto formativa e necessaria agli strumenti barocchi); VII - 10 brani selezionati per fornire allo studente un corpus che possa racchiudere l'essenza degli aspetti tecnici e musicali. Esercizi ed esempi sono arricchiti da 210 video con una breve e sintetica guida per le indicazioni e le motivazioni delle scelte esecutive e di studio mostrate nel video. Completano il libro tabelle e regole generali. In Appendice ho inserito il mio adattamento, ricalcandone lo stile, di un'opera di Buddha che anni fa mi colpì perchè poteva adattarsi perfettamente alla didattica e ai tanti aspetti che un liutista deve conoscere, sviluppare e approfondire. La sua revisione è stata un'occasione unica per poter organizzare una guida didattica nel senso più ampio possibile, toccando anche riflessioni e concetti che vanno al di là della mera esecuzione strumentale.
