Description

The most well known members of the Savage family in the village of Sutton Bonington and its surrounding villages in Nottinghamshire, were John Savage (d.1620), who was the Rector of the church of St. Michaels in Sutton Bonington, and his son, Thomas Savage (d.1662), who was the Rector of both the churches of St. Michaels and St. Annes in Sutton Bonington. John Savage (d.1620), was appointed as the Rector of Sutton Bonington in 1580 by Lord Berkeley, who held the advowson of St. Michaels. However before 1580, there were members of other Savage families residing in Sutton Bonington, who were recorded in 1562-1575 in the Parish Registers. These Savages along with further members of the various Savage families found in the Parish Registers in the 17th and 18th centuries, form a Savage family whose line of descent is separate from the Savage family of John Savage, the Rector of Sutton Bonington (d.1620). The earlier Savage family is referred to as the FIRST SAVAGE LINE of Sutton Bonington, while the family of John Savage, Rector of Sutton Bonington (d.1620), is named as he SECOND SAVAGE LINE of Sutton Bonington.The FIRST LINE is very extensive and is the subject of most of this book. Various branches of this Line moved to other villages in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, to Middlesex and London, and also to other parts of the world. The SECOND LINE is somewhat smaller and has fewer branches.
