Except for the recurring presence of the main character, it does not feature any of the characteristics of a traditional series (weekly episodes, of regular duration, with cast, direction and fixed production team). Thought as telefilms (hour and a half as an average duration), each episode features an independent story and a different director and production team. The films had an irregular transmission, but with a minimum of three or four productions per year until 1978. More than ten years later, Falk reprised his character for two years (1989-1990). From 1990, Columbo stopped airing regularly, and the following films were released as specials. For these reasons, the 68 episodes of Colombo spread irregularly over 35 years (1968-2003).
