If you are installing it above the fireplace - air intake should be located on the bottom, if below the fireplace - inlet should be at the top. This will keep the right convective flow of heated air. Color of grille painted with powder paint remains permanent and resistant to high temperatures and the grille itself is more resistant to mechanical damage.
