In Tohoku, especially, unique techniques were developed to combine multiple clothing for insulation to endure the cold winters. Since then, Sashiko has evolved through the ages into an art form to create beautiful designs using the combination of threads. The classic Sashiko design is to draw lines with white threads on blue cloth, and its rustic elegance is impressive. Sashiko, which was born out of practical necessity in life is the perfect symbol of "Beauty in Utility".
