On the 14th June 1803 Napoléon wrote to his Ministre de la Guerre, Général Berthier, informing him that, “Six camps seront formés lesquels destinés à ne composer qu une seule armée…” Two years, two months, and 15 days later those six camps, destined to form a single army, were transformed into la Grande Armée. It was Carl von Clausewitz, in ‘On War’, which itself is a study of Napoléon’s strategy and tactics, who wrote that, “War is the continuation of politics by other means”; la Grande Armée constituted Napoléon’s ‘other means’. La Grande Armée of 1805 was the world’s first modern, scientific army. Relentless in victory, and stubborn in defeat, it conquered a continent. This is the story of that army and the men who followed the Eagles.
