Description
Hail Caesar is a historical fiction novel that follows the life and times of Julius Caesar and his quest for power. It revolves around the turbulent decades that caused the Roman Republic to make the successful transition into empire. The story is told by Goliath and the first Roman Emperor, Augustus. Both are now riddled by old age and take turns recalling former triumphs and glory. Goliath is a conquered chieftain of his people and is forced to obey and make the tribesman he oversees do the same. If they do not follow orders, their families, which are captives of the Roman military, will be murdered since they are kept as collateral. With no alternative but to go along with the unfavorable circumstance, Goliath and his men are transformed into auxiliary units to serve the will of the consul, Caesar. This upstart general shows favor to Goliath for his own gains and teaches him politics and history, such as Grecian legends and of Alexander the Great, along with the rise of Rome and how the country was able to survive the onslaught of Hannibal the Barbarian.Seen through the lowly eyes of an assimilated grunt, Goliath ascends the ranks to become Caesar’s personal friend and part of his renowned bodyguard unit. The pair soon make names for themselves by achieving an unprecedented number of victories in lands many Roman citizens had never even heard of. As Goliath wrestles inwardly with killing savages not too unlike himself, all for the sake of his loved ones, Caesar uses him and the rest of his force to accomplish things that were previously not thought possible. The English Channel is crossed with a fleet of warships and Brittania is invaded, a bridge is created to cross the Rhine River and enter Germania, Aegyptus and parts of Africa are added to Roman territory thanks to Cleopatra, all of Gaul is subdued with the aid of Marc Antony (despite rebellions), and the final showdown is held in Graecia and Hispania between the patriots, such as Cicero, who fight for democracy and the Republic, versus the separatists and the empire controlled by the budding dictator, Caesar, who is adored by the people. All the research compiled herein is depicted to better understand the complexity of what made the age of Julius Caesar such a unique era in the Roman timeline. It will enrich the reader’s sense of the past and the struggles of ancient history, as well as offering ongoing proof for the perpetual nature of love and war.
