Il y a plus de 25 ans, Takeshi Shikama, qui est né et vit à Tokyo, décide de s'installer à la campagne, dans la province de Yamanashi. Pour construire une maison sur le terrain qu'il possède, il faut abattre un certain nombre de conifères centenaires. Takeshi participe au déblayement du terrain et racontera plus tard son expérience, lorsque la sève des arbres coupés lui coulait sur les bras, imprégnant sa peau et son esprit. Au Japon, ou la forêt recouvre 80% du territoire, on considère que les arbres aussi ont une âme. Takeshi ne s'en doute pas, mais cette expérience va bouleverser sa vie. Sept années plus tard, ce citadin de souche s'aventure dans la forêt pour s'y promener. Il s'y perd et se retrouve au milieu d'un sous-bois, tapis d'ombres et parsemé d'éclaircies. C'est à ce moment qu'il ressent un lien profond avec la nature, comme si la sève des arbres abattus s'était mêlée à son sang. Il décide alors de revenir le lendemain pour immortaliser cette épiphanie émotionnelle, à l'aide d'une chambre photographique. Après une carrière dans le design, son oeil est aguerri à la composition. Abordant l'obscurité comme point de départ il laisse l'oeil cheminer vers la lumière, symbole d'espoir. S'attelant à photographier les forêts du Japon, il laisse son instinct le guider, et se met à l'écoute de la nature. "Ce n'est pas moi qui choisi les arbres à photographier, c'est eux qui me choisissent, " dira-t-il. "Ils m'appellent et me demandent de réaliser leurs portraits". Il nommera sa première série : "Respiration Silencieuse des Forets", dont il réalise un ouvrage (2008). C'est en venant aux Rencontres d'Arles en 2008, et avec l'aide de Yukiko, sa femme, assistante et interprète, que Takeshi Shikama confronte son travail au monde professionnelle de la photographie. Alors que la plupart des candidats aux Portfolio Reviews viennent munis de CDs, clés USB ou books de tirages numériques, Takeshi apporte plusieurs boîtes d'épreuves au platine/palladium qu'il a réalisé lui-même. Le photographe se révèle être aussi un artisan du tirage. Les participants sont subjugués. Le collectionneur Bill Hunt en pleur d'émotion. La route sera encore longue avant sa première exposition en galerie, mais le photographe à enfin la confirmation, de par ses pairs, qu'il est sur la bonne voie. Grace aux expositions organisées sur plusieurs continents, l'artiste aura l'occasion de voyager. Il appliquera ce même regard contemplatif pour créer de nouvelles séries autour des espaces sauvages (Yosemite, Galicia, Isle of Skye) ou ceux domptés par l'homme (Urban Forests, Valley of Beauty, Garden of Memory). La période que nous vivons, entre le réchauffement climatique et la pandémie, nous fait prendre conscience de l'importance qu'a la nature dans nos vies. Ce livre souhaite réconforter et renforcer le sentiment d'émerveillement et d'attachement que nous éprouvons pour notre planète. A défaut de changer les mentalités, cet ouvrage restera un témoin durable et universel des trésors que recèle notre Terre mère, pour les générations futures.
