The Lonsdale brand was founded in London in 1960 by the then 22-year-old British boxer Bernhard Hart. Namesake for his brand was Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), who made a name for himself in modern boxing sports in the 1890s. Hugh Lowther was a founding member of the National Sporting Club, who held public boxing fights under strict rules and thus significantly contributed to the social recognition of boxing. In 1960, Bernhard Hart opened the first Lonsdale shop on Beak Street, in the middle of London Quarter of Soho.
