Trotz dieser Rückschläge möchte Ross seine Heimat nicht verlassen. Er ist fest dazu entschlossen, sein Erbe anzutreten und die Zinnminen seiner Familie wieder in Betrieb zu nehmen. Ross ist ein Mann von Ehre mit starkem Sinn für soziale Gerechtigkeit und so liegt ihm auch das Wohl der ehemaligen Minenarbeiter am Herzen. Schon bald gerät er deswegen in Konflikt mit dem Adel. Und auch sein Privatleben ist ein großes Chaos. Er rettet das junge Mädchen Demelza aus den Fängen ihres alkoholkranken und brutalen Vaters und stellt sie als Dienstmädchen ein. Mit der Zeit wird sie unentbehrlich für ihn. Er verliebt sich heftig, doch mit einem Teil seines Herzens hängt er immer noch an der schönen Elisabeth. So ist Poldark hin- und hergerissen zwischen zwei Frauen und zwei sozialen Schichten.
