Description

Otto Klemperer (1885-1973) was one of the most important and influential conductors of the 20th century. His interpretations of Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler still set the benchmark for a new generation of conductors today. Klemperer grew up at the times of the German Empire and celebrated the beginning of the 20th century. During the Weimar Republic, he then made a real career that was climax in his legendary direction of the Berlin Krolloper. Meanwhile, he also caught it in the Soviet Union. The Nazi regime forced Klemperer into exil in the USA in 1933. After the Second World War, he spent three years at the State Opera in Budapest to settle down in Zurich in 1954. It followed a late bloom with the London Philharmonia Orchestra and regular guest performances with Europe's large orchestra. He gave his final concert in September 1971. In OTTO KLEMPERER S LONG JOURNEY THROUGH HIS TIMES restored, newly edited and finally released again after 20 years, Philo Bregstein Klemperer's fascinating career with a rich selection of historical film, photo and sound material. We often hear Klemperer himself, who tells his story, as well as many of his long-standing friends and colleagues, musicians and singers who knew him well, and also his daughter Lotte Klemperer. With its exclusive film material with rehearsal and the actual last Klemperers concert on September 26, 1971 in London, Klemperer's musical will. Just a few months before, Klemperer had his lifelong rejection to be filmed, and allowed Philo Bregstein to accompany him in filmics. The history and creation of both films, Klemperer's own priority as a musical visionary and his legacy to the generations of musicians after him is explained in the 180-page book in this unique edition. The book combines director and his team's introductions and special, detailed contributions by renowned musicians with a large number of rare photographic material Review Splendidly realised. --MusicWeb,Jan'17
