From the time of his early essays in composition, however, Orff has regarded himself as a melodist. "Carmina Burana", written in 1935/36, of which Orff has said that "it begins my complete works", supports his own view of his characteristics as a composer to a greater extent than almost any of his other scores. The entire structure of this scenic cantata is based on the diatonic, strophic song, i.e. an art form whose lapidary simplicity can be effective only if it is animated by powerful melodic invention...
