Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original Formula is a higher-proof VS (‘three-star’) Cognac crafted in Grande Champagne (1er Cru de Cognac). Created to honour the golden age of cocktail-making, it was developed by Ferrand Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel in partnership with renowned cocktail historian David Wondrich. Flavour is bright, rich and mixable. Expect ripe, juicy grape at the core, accented by meadow flowers and acacia blossom with a bracing hint of cedar. On the palate it stays warm yet clean, lifting into honey, vanilla and spice, with dried peel and apricot notes on the finish. Ferrand’s process is deliberately traditional. Ugni Blanc grapes are fermented for 4–5 days, then open-flame double-distilled in a 25hL copper pot still on heavy lees for extra body. Maturation balances structure and freshness: 25% new 350L oak (medium toast) during the first years, alongside 75% older cognac barrels, finished with a measured dosage (14.5 g/L) to round the edges without masking the fruit. Perfect serve is cocktail-first. Ferrand recommends 1840 for an alluringly fresh Mint Julep, inspired by bartender Jerry Thomas. In a julep cup, gently muddle 15 mint leaves with 15ml simple syrup, add 75ml cognac and fill with crushed ice. Stir until the cup frosts, top with more crushed ice and garnish with fresh mint. It also shines in classic cocktails like the Sidecar, and in drinks paired with Ferrand Dry Curaçao. Prestige is backed by competition results: World Cognac Awards Gold (2022) and Best V.S. (2021). At the London Spirits Competition 2022 it won Gold and was named Cognac of the Year (92 points).
