Description

MUSIC - Music was much enjoyed by Confucius who saw it as a basic element of human harmony. HOUSES, GARDENS AND THE HONOURABLE MAN - With due Confucian regard for order and control over nature the Chinese gardens are amongst the greatest beauties of the land. PAINTING AND THE HONOURABLE MAN - For many centuries Chinese painters have wonderfully depicted the people and the landscape. SCIENCE - No society has done so much for science; their great qualities of curiosity and invention have been an immeasurable gift to the world. DESCENT INTO CHAOS - As the Confucian ethic is dimmed and clouded by blind conservatism, battered by outside forces, Chinese society disintegrates. Review I found this a fascinating series. So much that reaches us on China these days is grim, noisy, hyperactive and unsettling, but here we get a different rather more leisurely, optimistic picture of the country, and a beautiful one. A scholarly and informed guide, Hossick takes us through the cultural and political history of China, attending its operas, reading its literature and reflecting upon its leaders. He shows us so much that is beautiful in the culture and positive in the people, and reveals the extent to which Confucius' (Mr. Kong's) benign wisdom at one time pervaded the country's psychology and governance. The series also gives us some insight into how these very qualities left the people vulnerable to being led down the distressing road of their recent history. It ends on a note of optimism that China can regain its lost self and its Confucian ideals to the benefit not only of the Chinese people, but of all of us. Rather like a piece of Chinese artwork itself, the series moves at a reflective pace with time and light surrounding the beautiful images and measured narration. Highly recommended. --Judith Ramm, Retired Head Teacher & Amazon Customer REVIEW OF ACADEMY MEDIA'S 'FAMOUS AUTHORS' SERIES: Drawing on old maps, contemporary drawings and paintings, portraits and other archive material, the excellent Famous Authors series not only presents a factual outline of the writer's life, but also conveys a clear visual picture of the social and historical background to his or her writing. Recommended for all ages. --The Good Book Guide
