Description

The Fifth Symphony, one of Gustav Mahler's most popular works, was composed between 1901 and 1902. This work in the Romantic style underwent a number of changes: the orchestration was first revised by Mahler in 1903 and 1904 and the percussion changed after a rehearsal with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In a detailed preface, this new critical edition sheds light on the genesis, the numerous changes made by Gustav Mahler and the performance history of the Fifth Symphony. Throughout the score there are occasional annotations by the editor on the manner of performance or the provenance of the sources, which are dealt with in more detail in the critical report. This critical complete edition was published in 2002 by Edition Peters and was published by the International Gustav Mahler Society. Die fünfte Sinfonie, eines der populärsten Werke von Gustav Mahler, entstand zwischen den Jahren 1901 und 1902. Dieses Werk im Stil der Romantik erlebte eine Vielzahl von Änderungen: so wurde die Instrumentierung erst 1903 und 1904 von Mahler überarbeitet und das Schlagwerk durch eine Leseprobe mit den Wiener Philharmonikern verändert. Diese kritische Neuausgabe beleuchtet in einem ausführlichen Vorwort die Entstehung, die vielzähligen, von Gustav Mahler vorgenommenen Änderungen und die Aufführungsgeschichte der fünften Sinfonie. In der gesamten Partitur gibt es vereinzelt Anmerkungen vom Herausgeber zur Aufführungsweise oder zur Quellenherkunft, worauf der kritischen Bericht genauer eingeht. Nachfolgend werden die Edition und die Aufführungspraxis genauer beleuchtet.Diese kritische Gesamtausgabe erschien 2002 in der Edition Peters und wurde von der Internationalen Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft herausgegeben.
