Description

The genesis and first performance of the Paris Symphony K.297, written after the first lengthy hiatus in Mozarts symphonic output, are especially well documented because this time Mozart travelled with his mother and sent reports by letter back to his father. As we learn from a letter from Mozart to his father, the Symphony in D major K.297 was completed on 12 June 1778 and performed at the Concerts Spirituels on the 18th of that same month. Mozart also sent an account of the rehearsal and performance to his father, recounting that the rehearsal led him to expect the worst whereas the performance left him highly satisfied, particularly as the passages he considered especially effective were greeted with the anticipated applause. In keeping with the opportunities available in Paris, the symphony is the first to call for a much larger orchestra than we encounter in its predecessors.
