The Starrett 84MZ-161-7J Dial Bore Gauge has a measurement range of 203.2 to 308 mm and gradient spacing of 0.002 mm. Two centralizing plungers provide accurate tool alignment within the bore. This direct-measuring gauge uses a two-point contact system for detection of geometry problems such as ovality and taper. Contact points are made of hardened tool steel contact points for wear resistance and are spring-loaded for sensitivity. The housing and knurled handle are made of aluminium for a lightweight feel and good balance. Dial indicators have jewel bearings for sensitivity and the gauge is furnished in a finished wood case. Bore gauges measure holes or bores, in a workpiece. They can measure the interior diameter of a hole at any depth, while internal micrometers can only measure to the depth of their teeth. Bore gauges are typically calibrated with a setting ring and come in two types: simple and direct-measuring.
