Amazon.co.uk You can almost see the smile wreathing Britten's face in the "Jupiter" Symphony which acts as a jovial scene-setter for the disc. This is Mozart bringing operatic drama to the orchestra (just try the last movement of the "Jupiter"--a gloriously uninhibited summation in the manner of Mozart's best operatic finales). No. 39's more military, unbending demeanour receives an energetic and immensely "classical" performance: though these recordings both date from the 1960s, Britten didn't subscribe to romantic gesturings in this music and in that respect his performances sound remarkably modern. The irresistibly Pied Piper-ish finale positively dances off the page. The English Chamber Orchestra rises magnificently to the occasion, simultaneously sounding rich and well-disciplined. Pears, too, is remarkably (perhaps surprisingly, for this was not repertoire generally associated with him) fine in these two concert arias (particularly in "Per pietà"), capturing their spirit well, with none of the strain that dogged his later career. The sound is perfectly acceptable, sounding less weathered than its 30-plus years might lead you to expect. --Harriet Smith
