World Scientific Publishing Company THE DEADLY NARRATIVE: TERRORISM FINANCE IN INDONESIA

The Deadly Narrative: Terrorism Finance in Indonesia is a unique blend of academic research, journalism, and activism. It provides an in-depth exploration of the crucial role narratives play in terrorism financing within Indonesia, often leading to catastrophic consequences. Drawing on exclusive interviews with dozens of convicted terrorists linked to terrorism financing ― including members of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) ― this book offers unprecedented insight into the motivations behind funding extremist groups. While most works on terrorism financing focus primarily on the technicalities ― identifying key players, financial networks, and mechanisms ― The Deadly Narrative takes a more profound and necessary approach. It asks the fundamental question: why do individuals choose to donate to organisations that promote violence and extremism? Moreover, it investigates how these groups skilfully construct and disseminate persuasive narratives that not only secure financial backing but also ensure the sustainability of their operations. This book is the first of its kind to delve into the psychological and social factors that drive individuals to provide financial support to terrorist organisations, shifting the focus from the "who" to the "why" and the "how." It also offers a timely reflection on the broader question of how societies can counter these evolving threats. Through this comprehensive approach, the book highlights the importance of addressing the ideological and narrative dimensions of terrorism financing to better understand and combat this complex issue.
