Description

This book examines the evolution, contexts and politics of the structures and institutions that shape contemporary Russia. It analyses the Soviet dissolution, revealing the combination of structural and agency factors. It traces the re-emergence of Russia from a unique perspective that is neither Western nor Eurasian, but specifically Indian, located in the global South. The book looks at key theoretical concepts and practices like democratic centralism that produced an overly centralised and rigid hierarchy within the Communist Party. This book assesses the continuities and changes with the Soviet past and the way the Russian regimes of the past two decades have reinvented and reshaped them. This book provides a multifaceted interpretation of contemporary Russia for general readers and specialists.  Review “Re-emerging Russia: Structures, Institutions and Processes” provides a deep and honest overview of the recent developments in Russian politics and society. The authors’ insights and arguments draw on a thorough analysis of an extensive evidence base. The narrative is free of ideological clichés. The book is an exciting and convincing reading. It is an excellent contribution to the literature seeking to understand Russia.” (Dr. Marina Larionova, Head of the Center for International Institutions Research (CIIR, Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA)) “From the ashes of the Soviet Union Russia has risen as a global power.  How did that happen? The book is an account of this remarkable resurgence.  Prof. Anuradha M. Chenoy with her long experience in Russian Studies and Dr. Rajan Kumar present a comprehensive non-Western, non-Eurasian account of Russia’s rise.  The book will be useful for teaching of Russia in the universities.” (Arvind Gupta. Deputy National Security Advisor, Government of India) “The greatest merit of the authors possibly rests on their attempt to show Russia, and the region, from a novel perspective. With countries like India gaining weight in the international arena, the opportunity for scholars to look at Eurasian affairs from a non Western and non Eurasian angle is extremely valuable.” (Dr. Abel Polese, Dublin City University, Ireland) From the Back Cover This book examines the evolution, contexts and politics of the structures and institutions that shape contemporary Russia.
