Description

The search for universal principles and laws in world politics is a colossal common task for all civilisations. It should not be monopolised by the Western liberal paradigm. Thirty years after the end of the Cold War, global conflicts have been satisfactorily resolved neither by communism nor liberalism. Humanitarian intervention, now under the cover of the responsibility to protect (R2P), has destabilised many societies, leaving justice undone. This inspiring book invites debates on the post-liberal imagination of "emancipated Leviathan": an almighty political authority which exercises awe and force to restore order, as well as enshrines globally-negotiated values of common conscience and reinvented cosmopolitanism. Human well-being will truly become reality when we synergise pre-modern and pre-liberal ways of thinking, worldviews, ethics, and aesthetic styles by means of cross-civilisational, cross-disciplinary fundamental research, and let an emancipated Leviathan exercises principles and laws of virtue derived from the study. Review "This book offers an important vision of world politics in which Chinese cosmopolitanism will pay a central role." --Gerard Delanty, Professor of Sociology and Social Political Thought, University of Sussex, United Kingdom"In recent years, the rise of Chinese theories of international relations has driven non-Western International Relations (IR) theory to grow from an idea to reality. By utilising Chinese historical tradition and culture, which includes thoughts in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, scholars have enriched and improved Western-oriented IR theories. They have produced moral realism and relational theory. This significant progress has drawn immense attention from the international academic sphere. Nevertheless, it is by nature self-contained and self-referenced. It is an attention shift from Chinese foreign relations to Chinese culture. This novel monograph demonstrates a great leap in perfecting the Western theories and solving global problems in reality. With reference to Zuo Zhuan, this book is nurtured by the essence of traditional Chinese culture, before it analyses the Chinese way to global conflict resolution and explores principles and laws in world politics. It showcases the confidence and self-awareness of the Chinese agenda and dispenses wisdom for the solution of paradoxes faced by the whole of humanity. It is a great read." --Wang Yiwei, Jean Monnet Chair Professor of European Studies, School of International Studies, Director of Institute of International Affairs, Renmin University of China"This is a fascinating work of world politics studies, inspired by and immersed in the traditional Chinese philosophical thoughts and world vision. Driven by his humanistic concerns, the author has endeavored to tackle the perennial conundrum of human conflicts and the possible solutions. Based on an extensive search of relevant scholarly literature from various angles, the author has come up with his own intellectual innovations, centering around “Knowledge Archaeology of Chinese International Relations” (KACIR). This innovation is further assessed with possible practical usage in contemporary world affairs. This book should be appealing to readers who are interested in international theory, Chinese school of IR theories, and world politics generally." --Weiqing Song, Associate Professor of International Relations, Jean Monnet Chair in European Politics Department of Government and Public Administration Faculty of Social Sciences University of Macau Macao SAR, China
