Description

This book contains all information regarding magnetism and magnetic materials that an electrical engineer needs to know to be able to understand and design magnetic devices.The handbook comprises chapters comprising basic electromagnetism, basic quantum mechanics, ferromagnetism, magnetic materials, magnetic material characterization, modeling of magnetic materials, and magnetic design. A comprehensive description of the physical origin of magnetism of materials is given chapter two and a thorough review of the physics behind ferromagnetism is given in chapter three.All chapters are written in a textbook fashion such that they can easily be assimilated separately. The book gathers in an understandable the multidisciplinary topic of magnetism and magnetic materials in way that it can serve as a comprehensive introduction to engineers that considers use of magnetic materials in their designs.The book covers all major modeling techniques of magnetic materials including the well-known Presiach, Jiles-Atherton and lag models. General magnetic design approaches including major and new design tools also are presented.The book also serves as a guideline regarding the choice of feasible materials in specific applications regarding both soft and hard magnetic materials with an inventory of alternatives to electrical steel. Relevant performance criteria then are given such that appropriate materials can be selected. The final chapter offers a list of current electrical steel and magnetic material suppliers. About the Author <p><strong>Göran Engdahl</strong> (M'89–SM'04) was born in Uppsala, Sweden, in 1948. He received the M.Sc. and PhD degrees in electricity from Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden in 1974 and 1981 respectively. In 2001, he is a Professor of Electrotechnical Design in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Royal Institute of Technology. From 1983 to 1996 Engdahl was active as project manager at ABB working with product development regarding electric power components, where several projects were related to applications with new magnetic and magnetostrictive materials.</p> <p>Prof. Engdahl is the author of the book <em>Handbook of Giant Magnetostrictive Materials</em> issued 1999 by Academic Press and he has filed several patents regarding application of magnetic and magnetostrictive materials. His current research interests include modelling of magnetic and functional materials, electrical power components as power transformers, inductive power transfer, electromechanical actuators, and electric power switching devices. Since 2003 Prof. Engdahl is appointed to the board of experts of the CIUR (Committee Research Evaluation) in Italy and is assigned by the Swedish government to serve as technical specialist in patent trials until 2023.</p>
