This book can be used as a general guide in the use of natural products to manage common health ailments and by potential researchers in natural products, medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy, phytomedicine and/or phytochemistry for an overview of the biological properties of natural products. The book describes widely used medicinal plants and essential oils. It tabulates 55 biological properties of 171 medicinal plants indigenous to India with an emphasis on Indian medicinal plants that have a long tradition of medicinal use in Ayurveda. The resulting table is color coded, providing a quick overview of different medicinal plants exhibiting similar biological activities. About the Author Dr Durga Nath Dhar (10.9.32–6.2.2018) was a chemistry educator at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He received his PhD in chemistry in 1958 from Agra University. He joined the chemistry department at IIT Kanpur in 1960 as a lecturer and retired as a professor in August 1992. He visited several prominent universities in USA, UK, and USSR. He was a very productive scholar authoring several books and journal articles. Many students received doctoral degrees under his supervision. His students hold prominent positions in academia and industry all over the world. He remained active professionally after his retirement serving as an academic advisor to universities, member on several dissertation committees, visiting faculty member, and member of educational accreditation agencies.Dr Preeti Dhar is a professor of chemistry and director of the Biochemistry Program at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She has a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, and has done post-doctoral research at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Dr Dhar's research interests are in natural product chemistry, pharmacognosy, medicinal chemistry, synthetic and bio organic chemistry. Her research has appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Phytochemistry, Food Biophysics, Helvetica Chimica Acta, Polymer Preprints, Journal of Essential Oil Research, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis, Journal of Undergraduate Research, Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and Journal of Chemical Education. She is actively involved in research with undergraduate students at her institution and has presented her research at national and international conferences including the annual conferences of the American Chemical Society, Council for Undergraduate Research, The Materials Research Society, and the American Society of Pharmacognosy. She has coauthored two books with her father, Professor Durga Nath Dhar (The Chemistry of Chlorosulfonyl Isocyanate and Nobel Prize Winners in Chemistry 1901–2009).
