Description

In this book, Jin Kai provides an alternative perspective on the power interactions between a rising China and a "relatively" declining U.S. in the changing world situation. Grounded in previous scholarship, Jin argues that China's rise is historically, culturally, and structurally different; a peaceful power transition requires engagement by the U.S. in international institutions. Grounded in case studies and theory, this study will be of relevance to any reader interested in the evolving great power relationship between China and the U.S.  Review “Rising China in a Changing World offers a valuable overview of US–China relations in the contemporary era and identifies the roots of their conflictual relationship in a unique way. … Jin Kai’s book is a must-read for those interested in the current debates regarding a rising China, the Thucydides trap and the role of United States and China in this globalised world.” (Behzad Abdollahpour, China Report, Vol. 55 (1), 2019) From the Back Cover This book provides an alternative perspective to examine the power interactions between a rising China and a “relatively” declining United States in the changing world situation. It first revisits Power Transition Theory and particularly some of the key terms and concepts such as degree of satisfaction, then analyzes the differences between the rise of China and that of former emerging powers, and finally argues that the rise of China is historically, culturally, and structurally different. Hence, a peaceful power transition (if any) in the future can only be realized through a successful engagement by the dominant U.S. particularly in international institutions. Readers will find qualitative case studies, both historical and institutional, and a discussion of how the application of game theory can best direct the U.S. policy toward China. Graduate students and academics with a focus in international relations and East Asia studies as well as policy makers will find this book a valuable resource in identifying the reasonable path of China’s changing relationship with the U.S. In an increasingly interconnected world, great powers must engage and reconcile with each other particularly over cross-border issues. About the Author Jin Kai is Lecturer at the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University, South Korea and a columnist for The Diplomat. He previously served with the People’s Liberation Army of China as a Professional Officer and was an International Communications and Public Relations Officer for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Center of Education for International Understanding.
