Description

The years after the Second World War (1945) marked the beginning of a tremendous increase in the worldwide availability, ready acceptance and use of modern cosmetics products. Unfortunately, many of these cosmetics are from dubious sources and are of questionable qualities. They are used by women, men and teenagers who have little or no information about the negative implications of some of the ingredients used in the manufacture of these products. In the particular case of Africans, especially those South of the Sahara, with their distinctive dark skin pigmentation and kinky hair structure, their preferences for a lighter complexion and straight hair have greatly increased their demand for those cosmetic products that will satisfy these desires. It is common knowledge that most of the cosmetics obtainable in many African countries are not manufactured in those countries. They are imported from international cosmetics manufacturers whose products are manufactured specifically for the skin type of their nationals and who hardly take into consideration the unique components of the black skin type in the African population, creating what is recently being referred to as and 'Ethnic Beauty Gap'. In addition, these imported cosmetics are some of the most irresponsibly manufactured and most abused products in the world. Some of the cosmetic products result in adverse effects which have become a source of concern to the health sector of many countries. It is for this reason that they require special controls regarding, among other things, their formulation, safety tests, quality and advertisement. In twenty-six chapters, this book aims at providing informed directives for the responsible manufacture and use of cosmetics products. It is designed for the use of students in tertiary institutions who offer Cosmetics as one of the subjects or courses in their academic programmes, for their lecturers and professors, for researchers of the Science of Cosmetology, health sector personnel that are concerned with human skin and for small-and large-scale manufacturers of cosmetics. The language of the book is simple enough to be read and understood by all including those consumers who only wish to seek information about the cosmetics they are presently using or are about to start using.
