Sólo el Occidente moderno se dedicó a clasificar a los seres según que participaran de las leyes de la materia o del azar de las convenciones. La antropología no ha apreciado aún en su justa medida esta aserción: en la definición misma de su objeto la diversidad cultural contra un fondo de universalidad natural perpetúa una oposición que los pueblos estudiados por ella no establecen. ¿Se puede pensar un mundo sin distinguir entre la cultura y la naturaleza? Philippe Descola propone aquí un nuevo enfoque de las maneras de repartir continuidades y discontinuidades entre el hombre y su medioambiente. Su investigación pone de relieve cuatro modos de identificar a los «existentes» y agruparlos sobre la base de rasgos comunes que se corresponden de un continente a otro: el totemismo, que destaca la continuidad material y moral entre humanos y no-humanos; el analogismo, que postula entre los elementos del mundo una red de discontinuidades estructurada por relaciones de correspondencia; el animismo, que atribuye a los no-humanos la interioridad de los humanos pero los diferencia de estos por el cuerpo, y el naturalismo, que, al contrario, nos asocia con los no-humanos por las continuidades materiales y nos separa de ellos por la aptitud cultural. La cosmología moderna se ha convertido en una fórmula entre otras, pues cada modo de identificación autoriza configuraciones singulares que distribuyen a los existentes en colectivos de fronteras muy diferentes de aquellas con las cuales nos han familiarizado las ciencias humanas. Este libro invita a una recomposición radical de esas ciencias y a un reordenamiento de su ámbito, a fin de incluir en él mucho más que al hombre: todos esos «cuerpos asociados» relegados durante demasiado tiempo a una función de entorno.
