Die Vielzahl und Dimensionierungen der Stadterweiterungen im späteren Mittelalter lassen Aufbruchstimmung und Zukunftsoptimismus erkennen. Trotz geringer Ressourcen wurden Vergrößerungen und Erweiterungen großflächig und auf erheblichen Zuwachs angelegt. Erweiterungsprozesse zogen sich in der Regel über Jahrzehnte hin, wobei die auftretenden Strukturveränderungen nur interdisziplinär zu erfassen sind. Der materielle „Fußabdruck“ dieser komplexen Vorgänge sind neue Mauern, Straßen und Gebäude, mitunter sogar Gebäudetypen. Politisch und rechtlich erforderten Stadterweiterungen vor allem die Integration des „Neuen“ und die jeweilige Aushandlung von privilegierten und hinzukommenden Rechtspositionen. Konkurrierende korporative Rechte waren in Einklang zu bringen; Altstädte, Altstadterweiterungen, „Neustädte“ oder auch Vorstädte mussten politisch, sozial und ökonomisch funktional interagieren können. So finden Erweiterungen ihren Ausdruck von unterschiedsloser Integration des neuen Stadtteils bis hin zu komplexen Verfassungskonstrukten wie den rechtlich und bisweilen auch räumlich getrennten Doppel- oder Mehrfachstädten. Die vielfältigen Formen und Abstufungen, auf die man sich vorübergehend oder auf lange Dauer angelegt einigen konnte, deuten darauf hin, dass urbane Wachstumsprozesse nicht auf Vergrößerung oder Verbesserung reduziert werden können, sondern auch stets von Konflikten und Konsenssuchen begleitet waren. Im Band werden Perspektiven entwickelt, um Stadterweiterungen im Hinblick auf Topographie, Architektur, Verfassung, Wirtschaft und Alltagskultur zu analysieren und interdisziplinär zusammenzuführen, aber auch um einzelne Fälle und „Cluster-Einzelfälle“ in größere Konjunkturen und Aufschwungsphasen einzuordnen. English abstract The number and scale of urban expansions in the later Middle Ages reveal a sense of new beginnings and optimism about the future. Despite limited resources, enlargements and extensions were planned on a large scale and aimed at substantial growth. Expansion processes generally unfolded over decades, and the structural transformations that occurred can only be fully understood through an interdisciplinary approach. The material “footprint” of these complex processes consists of new walls, streets, and buildings, and sometimes even entirely new building types. Politically and legally, urban expansions above all required the integration of the “new” and the negotiation of both existing privileges and newly emerging legal positions. Competing corporate rights had to be reconciled; old towns, extensions of old towns, “new towns,” or suburbs had to be able to interact functionally in political, social, and economic terms. Thus, expansions ranged from the seamless integration of a new district into the existing city to complex constitutional arrangements such as legally – and sometimes spatially – separate twin or multiple cities. The diverse forms and gradations of arrangements that could be agreed upon, either temporarily or for the long term, indicate that processes of urban growth cannot be reduced simply to enlargement or improvement; they were always accompanied by conflicts and by efforts to reach consensus. This volume develops perspectives for an analysis of urban expansions in terms of topography, architecture, constitutional structures, economy and everyday culture, bringing these aspects together in an interdisciplinary framework. It also seeks to situate individual cases and clusters of cases within broader cycles and phases of urban expansion and economic growth.
