Met ingang van 17 augustus 2015 is de Europese Erfrechtverordening van toepassing voor de Europese lidstaten, met uitzondering van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Ierland en Denemarken. Deze verordening vervangt de nationale regelgeving op het gebied van het internationale erfrecht in de lidstaten. Zij regelt zowel de bevoegdheid van de rechter, het conflictenrecht (welk recht is toepasselijk op de nalatenschap) en de Europese Erfrechtverklaring (EEV), als de erkenning en tenuitvoerlegging van rechterlijke beslissingen, authentieke akten en gerechtelijke schikkingen, binnen de grenzen van de verordening. Zij bestrijkt een ruimer gebied dan het Haags Erfrechtverdrag en heeft haar eigen Europeesrechtelijke definities in het erfrecht. Voor Nederland is en blijft het ook in dit boek behandelde Haags Testamentsvormenverdrag toepasselijk. Kortom, bij het afwikkelen van nalatenschappen met vermogen ‘over de grens’ (denk aan het vakantiehuisje in Frankrijk of elders) is dit boek, met zijn theoretische onderbouwing en de praktische uitwerking daarvan, onontbeerlijk.
