Naga. La beauté de l'effroi est un ouvrage totalement inédit qui propose de partir à la rencontre d'une société qui, aux confins de l'Inde et de la Birmanie, est restée longtemps inconnue et fermée sur elle-même. Par son paysage, celle-ci a échappé aux principaux mouvements de civilisations tout en développant une culture propre qui, en fonction des contacts pris avec ses voisins a connu une lente évolution avant d'être progressivement assimilée par l'Empire britannique. L'ouvrage est constitué de deux parties qui se complètent. Dans la première, il s'agit d'approcher cette culture en s'attachant d'une part à son organisation sociale et, d'autre part, à l'ensemble de des rites et croyances largement fondées sur une économie de l'énergie vitale. Dans ce registre, la "chasse aux têtes" et les fêtes du mérite, tout en déterminant la structure socio-culturelle des différents groupes Nagas, organisent le port de parures et d'ornements de grande qualité. Cet aspect compose la deuxième partie de l'ouvrage fondée sur l'exploration de la collection réunie par Anne-Marie Gillion-Crowet. Se distinguant d'une littérature de nature essentiellement anthropologique, l'essai composé par Michel Draguet entend souligner la qualité artistique d'artefacts qui sont aussi des œuvres d'art témoignant des valeurs culturelles et sociales propres aux différentes ethnies Nagas. Tout en reprenant les éléments qui définissent cette culture, le livre se veut une promenade à la découverte des œuvres qui composent cette collection d'un niveau exceptionnel. Tout en étant replacé dans son contexte d'usage, chaque objet est aussi traité pour lui-même comme une œuvre synthétisant une vision du monde. En liant des reproductions de l'ensemble des pièces à des photographies anciennes, le livre compose un objet d'art à l'écoute de la réalité anthropologique de ces artefacts qui signalent une culture aussi peu connue que fascinante.
