Toen uitgever Jan Christiaan Sepp in 1800 van start ging met een geïllustreerd overzichtswerk van alle Nederlandse planten, kon hij nooit vermoeden dat het laatste deel pas in 1934 zou verschijnen. Uiteindelijk besloeg de Flora Batava 461 afleveringen, verdeeld over 28 boeken: een titanenwerk waar een uitgebreide kring van amateurbotanici, hoogleraren en kunstenaars aan heeft bijgedragen. Dat resulteerde in de tot dan toe meest complete inventaris van de wilde flora van het land. Een verzamelwerk dat bovendien prachtig de grote veranderingen in het Nederlandse landschap, de wetenschap en de waardering van de nationale natuur illustreert. Deze unieke heruitgave in één band bevat een bundeling van alle 2240 platen met daarop meer dan 2630 naar het leven geschilderde planten, paddenstoelen, korstmossen en wieren. Daaruit zijn bovendien honderd iconische soorten gekozen, die op ware grootte en met de oorspronkelijke tekst worden uitgelicht en voorzien van een nieuw verhaal geschreven door een netwerk aan hedendaagse kenners en bewonderaars van planten. Samen met de uitgebreide inleiding en het soortenregister geeft deze nieuwe Flora Batava een bont beeld van onze plantenwereld en het bijzondere dat zij herbergt. Dit boek verschijnt onder de hoofdredactie van Esther van Gelder en Norbert Peeters, met bijdragen van meer dan zestig experts.
