At the core of all efforts for sustainable human development lies an adequate supply of freshwater. Although there are abundant water resources in Africa, most of these resources are located in the humid and sub-humid regions around the equator, and groundwater resources provide nearly two-thirds of drinking water on the continent, with an even greater proportion in northern Africa. This publication gives an overview of the nature of aquifers and river hydrology in 26 countries in Africa, using environmental isotopes to assess water resources in terms of quantity and quality. It contains location maps of study areas, summary statistics and relevant data plots; and for each country, listed alphabetically, a digital elevation map is given showing major water bodies and project study areas.
