Sustainability is an urgent response to the way humankind has been designing, producing and distributing products, which have been harmful to the planet and all beings on Earth. Sustainability includes creating plans and actions that are beneficial and restorative to the planet and all its natural resources and help draw down CO2 from the atmosphere. Sustainability is work towards responsibility and resiliency for all ecological systems and people, as well as working for financial responsibility. It is a wonderful and opportune time to change the culture of fashion and embed responsibility into everything we do in the fashion business. More and more each year, brads are creating products in ways that are gentler and more fair to the earth. They are reducing waste, working towards circularity, and seeking new innovations to reverse fashion's negative impacts on the earth.The Fashion Designer's Sustainable Sourcebook, is a tool to assist this urgent work. The directory includes fiber, fabric, trimmings, and production services that can positively impact our environment, ourpeople, our resources and our economy.With each listing, we advise how the company is environmentally and/or socially-responsible. For each company, it may be different. There are those that are pesticide-free and use organic, bamboo, hemp or recycled fibers in producing fabric. Others are manufacturing compostable or biodegradable products, or knitting and weaving with post-industrial or post-consumer waste. There are companies reducing their energy and water usage; or working towards zero-waste. As well as those utilizing non-toxic chemicals, all-natural dyes, or waterless finishes. If a company listed holds any eco-certifications, we include those as well.The companies listed are resources whose goal is the same as ours: a fully-sustainable fashion industry of the near future. The suppliers and services listed will help merchandisers, designers, sourcing, and sustainability teams reach the goal of designing and producing responsible and sustainably-minded collections of clothing and products that we hope consumers will buy, love, cherish, use, and keep for the long term, to help ensure equity to our planet and to all people for generations to come.Please design like the world depends on it, because it does!
