Description

The current world consists of states with their own, demarcated, usually contiguous territory and with their own citizens. These states rule sovereignly on their territory and over their citizens and are (normally) recognized as such by other states. Their power is legally established. They acquire income through taxes, have a monopoly on legitimate violence and a professional civil service. Their rulers generally try to legitimize their position and to create ‘national’ citizens. In the Late Middle Ages, areas with the same 'government' were often not contiguous. Their subjects were not 'citizens'. The authority of rulers was not absolute, all-encompassing and clearly demarcated. Uniform, generally applicable legislation did not exist. Rights and duties of subjects within the same 'administrative unit' were often very different. Paying taxes to 'the government' was not common for everyone and the government was not the only body that levied taxes. There were no national armies and police forces, nor a professional, national civil service. The legitimacy of government authority was not based on institutionalized participation by broad sections of the population and that population did not regard itself as a nation. In this book Peer and Annelieke Vries describe how, in Europe, the modern state came into being between the Late Middle Ages and the first decades of the twentieth century. Peer Vries was professor of Global Economic History at the University of Vienna from 2007 to 2016, when he retired. Before that he worked at Leiden University where he also defended his PhD. Annelieke Vries-Baaijens studied Physical Geography with a major in Cartography at Utrecht University. She defended her PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science at Delft University. Since 2010, she makes digital maps of historical subjects.
