Voor dit boek heeft Charles Beterams een diepe duik genomen in het archief van Van der Stam, het adembenemende oeuvre van de fotograaf verkend en blootgelegd. Een ongekende hoeveelheid nieuw ontdekte Pink Floyd transparanten en negatieven - te beginnen met die van de eerder genoemde sessies van de band uit 1967 in al zijn psychedelische glorie - zijn voor het eerst gecatalogiseerd, gescand en geretoucheerd.Nico van der Stam maakt ook foto's van Pink Floyd tijdens hun concerten in 1969 en 1970 in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw. Tegen de tijd dat de band in 1971 de Rotterdam Ahoy' speelt, doet hij zelf geen concertfotografie meer en wijst hij de nodige taken toe aan zijn toenmalige assistent Govert de Roos, die later zelf een gerenommeerd fotograaf zal worden en vriendelijk de nodige voorwoord bij dit boek. De meeste foto's van deze drie optredens zijn voor het eerst voor het publiek beschikbaar. Zijn beelden van Syd Barrett's The Pink Floyd uit 1967 zijn van een iconische schoonheid. Maar weinig mensen in Nederland - en nog minder in het buitenland - associëren deze foto's met fotograaf Nico van der Stam (Rotterdam 1925 - Amsterdam 2000), die de band in april 1967 in Amsterdam vastlegt en twee maanden later in Londen opnieuw. Aanvankelijk gericht op het documenteren van het dagelijkse stadsleven en de bloeiende lokale jazzscene, richt Van der Stam al snel zijn lens op de opkomende popmuziek en fotografeert hij beroemdheden als Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Mothers Of Invention, The Doors, Cream, Janis Joplin, The Kinks, The Supremes en The Pink Floyd. Regelmatig is hij te vinden in studio's waar artiesten opnames maken voor radio en televisie. "Ik ging naar de studio's, nam foto's van repetities en opnames en verkocht ze vervolgens aan de omroepen." De weinige foto's van Pink Floyd die eerder zijn gepubliceerd - zonder uitzondering in een kenmerkend vierkant formaat en niet zelden in kleur - zijn slechts een uittreksel uit de immense catalogus van Van der Stam met meer dan een miljoen negatieven.
