Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) is misschien wel Nederlands bekendste architect. Zijn Schröderhuis uit 1924 in Utrecht is inmiddels wereldberoemd. Rietveld bouwde nog zo’n 100 andere huizen, waarover maar weinig bekend is. Fotograaf Arjan Bronkhorst (1972), die met zijn bestseller Grachtenhuizen (2013) zijn vakmanschap als fotograaf liet zien, ging op zoek naar onbekende Rietveldhuizen. Hij fotografeerde hun interieurs en bewoners en reisde er o.a. voor naar de Verenigde Staten. De huizen van Rietveld kenmerken zich door licht en ruimte. Bij het ontwerpen was soberheid een van Rietvelds uitgangspunten. Het was slechts een beperkte groep van intellectuele klanten die de ‘weelde van de eenvoud’ aankon en bij Rietveld een avant-gardistisch huis bestelde. Auteurs Willemijn Zwikstra en Marc van den Eerenbeemt doken in de archieven en vroegen de bewoners hoe het is om in een Rietveldhuis te wonen. Rietveld-deskundige Ida van Zijl schrijft in haar inleiding: ‘het is hoog tijd voor een nieuw boek dat de bewoner centraal stelt, helemaal in de lijn van Rietveld die vond dat een huis slechts een achtergrond voor het leven is.’ ENGELS Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) is perhaps Holland’s best-known architect. His Schröder House in Utrecht from 1924 has achieved iconic status. In fact, Rietveld built around 100 houses, and of these very little is known. Photographer Arjan Bronkhorst (b. 1972), who established his credentials in 2013 with the bestseller Grachtenhuizen/Amsterdam Canal Houses, went in search of these unknown Rietveld houses. He photographed their interiors and residents, travelling as far as the United States. Light and space are what characterise Rietveld’s houses. Sobriety is a basic principle in his designs. Only appreciated by a small group of intellectual clients who commissioned Rietveld to design an avant-garde house. Authors Willemijn Zwikstra and Marc van den Eerenbeemt explored the archives and interviewed current residents about living in a Rietveld house. As Rietveld expert Ida van Zijl notes in her introduction: ‘it is high time for a new publication: a book that puts the resident first, just as Rietveld thought a house as a setting for life.’
